Born in Texas in 1892, Bessie Coleman was one of 13 children born to a black maid and a Native American sharecropper. Though she grew up picking cotton and washing laundry to earn money, Bessie longed for adventure. Inspired to become the first black woman pilot, she was forced to travel to France for training, as no school in America would take her because she was both black and a woman. After much determination, Bessie received her international pilot’s license in 1921. Bessie Coleman: Daring Stunt Pilot graphic novel, is the inspiring story of a black woman willing to fight the prejudices of that era, as well of the story of her untimely and tragic death.
